Communication Is More Than Speaking: Understanding, Responding, and Being Fully Present

“It turns out that communication isn’t about speaking, it’s also about understanding, responding, and being fully present as an individual”.
That was one of the lasting impressions shared by a participant of the Express it Right: Effective Communication and Positive Response training, held on April, 19 2025. The training was attended by 11 participants and facilitated by I Gede Supardika and Ni Komang Ayu Purnami. Coming from diverse backgrounds and personalities, the participants gathered to learn about something often taken for granted: communication. This training was initiated by the Karuna Bali Foundation through the Capung Melajah Department, which consistently provides learning spaces for personal development and life skills.
So, What’s This Training Really About?
From delivering and receiving messages, understanding communication style, and active listening, to practicing assertive responses, everything was thoroughly explored and practiced firsthand. Participants didn’t just listen to theories, they were also invited to reflect on their personal experiences, share stories, and actively develop their communication skills.
“I’ve come to realize that behind someone’s anger, there’s an underlying emotion. That makes me want to understand them, not judge them.” - Dewa Ayu
Real Impact of The Training
It wasn’t just about gaining knowledge, relationships also grew stronger. Many participants felt closer to one another, became more open, and more confident in expressing their thoughts and feelings. Some even shared that this training opened the door to build healthier communication at home and in their social circles.
“I’ve learned to reflect and improve myself to communicate better, both at work and at home.” - Ni Putu Warsiki
Memorable Moments
For many participants, what stood out the most was the moment they listened to each other’s stories, funny ones, sad ones, even long-held anger. It was in these moments that they realized communication isn’t just about speaking, but also about listening with empathy.
Slowly but Surely, Change Has Begun
Most participants felt their hopes were answered, they now have a better understanding of how to communicate effectively and are eager to apply it in their daily lives, whether at work with family, or in other relationships.
However, some also realized that change doesn’t happen overnight. It takes practice, reflection, and a space to grow in order to fully apply what they’ve learned. Change may not come in a day, but this training has been a meaningful starting point.
The majority of participants expressed their appreciation for the interactive and warm approach of the training. They hoped that similar programs would continue to be held, and even shared with other communities or organizations, so that more people could benefit from the experience.
This training wasn’t just about communication theory, it was about building bridges from heart to heart, mind to mind. Genuine communication becomes the foundation of harmonious relationships, built on mutual understanding and respect.
