Listen with Heart, Communicate Effectively

In this fast-paced world, the ability to communicate is the most important skill to master. By mastering this skill, everyone will find it easy to connect and be connected with each other. But sometimes, communication is only associated with public speaking or confidence in speaking in front of the audience. An important aspect of communication, where hearing/listening also holds a very important role in creating effective communication, is often overlooked. This was the main highlight of the Menyimak Aktif / Active Listening Training that was held on November 17, 2024 by Karuna Bali Foundation through the Capung Melajah - Life Skill Department. The training, held five times during 2024, emphasized that effective communication is not just talking but also hearing or listening, more specifically with full attention. Through an interactive approach and relevant materials, the training not only provided new knowledge but also became a means of self-reflection for each participant, helping them develop better life skills and improving the quality of interpersonal relationships.
New Knowledge that Opens Up Insights
One of the interesting findings from this training was that many participants realized that Active Listening is an important skill that requires practice. This training invites them to focus on two-way communication, understanding the content and emotions of the message, and avoiding the blockers in communication, such as prejudice or unrealistic expectations.
One participant said, “I just learned that being a listener is not just about listening but also involves reflection on content and emotions.”
In addition, participants also realized that Active Listening is an integral part of broader communication skills. It encompasses various roles in communication, both as a speaker and a listener, all of which complement each other to create effective communication.
Memorable Experience
This training is not just about learning theory but also an experience that changes the participants' perspective on communication. The enjoyable atmosphere, fun facilitators, and the opportunity to expand social networks through meeting new people were the main factors that made this training so memorable.
“I am happy to meet new people and learn about active listening. It feels different because it's not just a theoretical lesson but also hands-on practice,” said a participant.
The materials presented are designed to build interaction, where each participant feels engaged. This training also provided a space for them to reflect on their previous listening patterns and how to improve them.
Daily Impact
“It's very helpful in the workplace, especially because I need to understand when to speak, listen, or observe,” said a participant.
This training had a significant impact on participants' lives, especially in improving the way they communicate. Many participants feel that this Active Listening skill helps them to become more focused, thoughtful, and fully attentive when listening to others, without being burdened by unnecessary expectations. This helps to create more effective communication, resulting in better relationships with others.
The Inspiring Art of Listening
This Active Listening training proves that communication is not about delivering a message but also listening with empathy and full attention. Apart from being a skill, Active Listening is also an art to understand the emotions, perspectives, and needs of the other person.
With the high enthusiasm of the participants and the various benefits felt, this training was a reminder that listening is an art that can bring us closer to the people around us. In the future, training such as this is expected to continue to grow to provide wider benefits and become a foundation for building effective communication in various aspects of life.
